with
Breanne Johnson
Senior Attorney, Curray York & Associates LLC
Summary:
This session will provide guidance about the rules and responsibilities that exist during the employment eligibility and verification process, as well as insight into the latest I-9 updates. We’ll discuss how the I-9 should be completed, stored, and purged, as well as best practices and how to avoid discrimination claims. The presentation will also walk participants through the lifecycle of an affirmative and will share tips, common questions, and common mistakes about the I-9. We’ll talk through how, when, and why to conduct a self-audit and the steps you should take should you find any errors on your I-9s. Additionally, if time permits we will discuss I-9 audits by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), outlining what ICE is looking for when they conduct an audit and the financial ramifications of minor errors. At the conclusion of the presentation, participants will be up to speed on I-9 compliance updates and will be able to successfully self-audit their own I-9s.
