    Summary:

    Employers in Washington are required to juggle the requirements of numerous leave laws, including the Washington Paid Family and Medical Leave Act, the Washington Family Care Act, and the federal Family Medical Leave Act. Not to mention state and paid sick leave laws! This half-day workshop will provide a deep dive on the primary leave laws applicable to Washington employers with practical guidance for responding to requests for leave, coordinating different types of leaves, and understanding and avoiding liability.

      Learning Objectives:

      Participants will be able to:

      • Identify the many types of leaves of absences under federal, state, and local laws in Washington state.
      • Enable employers to understand and navigate employee leaves of absence in compliance with Washington and federal Law.
      • Develop strategies for handling leave requests and identify must-haves, red flags, and best practices for your organization's leave policies.

      About the Speakers:

      Deidra A. Nguyen serves as strategic partner for employers of all types and sizes in their efforts to maintain employment law compliance, attract and retain talent through competitive and best-in-class policies and paid leave offerings, and motivate and reward performance through creative incentive compensation programs, including commissions and bonuses.

      She helps clients stay current and compliant with employment law developments by auditing human resources practices, developing compliance strategies, providing workplace training to management and human resources staff, and drafting employee handbooks, policies, and employment agreements.

      As a core member of Littler’s Leaves of Absence and Disability Accommodation practice group, Deidra provides employers with national and multistate advice on a range of leave and disability issues, including the design, implementation, and administration of paid sick and safe time, paid family and medical leave, reasonable accommodation, paid parental leave, vacation and paid time off, and other leave and accommodation programs.

      As a member of the firm’s Audit Services Group, Deidra audits federal, state and local compliance issues throughout the life cycle of employment, from recruitment to termination.

      Deidra is licensed to practice law in California and Washington. 

      Courtney D. Bhatt is a senior associate at Littler’s Seattle office. She represents employers in the defense of federal and state employment law claims, including discrimination, harassment, internal investigations, and alternative dispute resolution. Further, Courtney represents and counsels employers in traditional labor law and labor relations matters. She provides advice and counsel, and innovative solutions to issues including harassment prevention training and inclusion, equity, and diversity.

      Courtney has extensive litigation and arbitration experience and has consistently obtained favorable results, including successful arbitration awards as first chair, summary judgments, and judgments upheld on appeal. She also has extensive experience conducting internal and external workplace investigations for private employers and public sector employers related to allegations of misconduct, including discrimination, retaliation, and sexual harassment.

      Prior to joining Littler, Courtney practiced labor and employment defense at a Tier 1 regional law firm in Washington, and she also practiced business litigation and administrative law at a business law firm in Bellevue, Washington. While in California, Courtney practiced employment defense at a law firm in the Los Angeles area. 

      Courtney holds a J.D. from Pepperdine University School of Law and earned a Certificate in Dispute Resolution from the Straus Institute for Dispute Resolution. She earned her A.B. from Dartmouth College. While at Dartmouth, Courtney received a Mellam Family Foundation Scholarship for outstanding community service and academic achievement and served as a student judiciary board member of the Committee on Standards.

      Courtney is licensed to practice law in California and Washington.
