SHRM Affiliates in Nine States Win 2011 Pinnacle Award for Creating Workplace Solutions

Alexandria, Va. – The Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM) today presented nine affiliates with the highest honor given to SHRM state councils and chapters—the Pinnacle Award—during its Leadership Conference, taking place Nov. 17-19 in Arlington, Va.

Affiliates from Arkansas, Georgia, Illinois, Kansas, Minnesota, Nebraska, Ohio, Texas and Washington won the award for developing innovative human resource programs on a variety of workforce issues, including: military or veteran-focused HR; workplace diversity; the impact of local legislative relationships on business policy; workplace violence; job training for youth and the homeless.

“For 21 years, the Pinnacle Award has recognized innovative solutions from SHRM’s chapters and state councils to local workforce challenges,” said Henry G. (Hank) Jackson, the president and CEO of SHRM. “The winning programs demonstrate that HR professionals know what’s next for their businesses and many of the workplace challenges we see today.”

Created in 1991, the award also honors programs that exceed the standard activities of SHRM affiliates in enhancing the creation of effective HR management.

Winning programs selected from nearly 70 applications received a $1,000 prize, sponsored by ADP Inc. this year.

“ADP is pleased to honor the achievements of these SHRM chapters and state councils,” said Regina Lee, president of Major Account Services, National Account Services, ADP Canada and GlobalView for ADP. “It’s truly inspiring to see how HR professionals are using new and innovative ways to create programs that address business challenges and issues.”

It offered basic information addressing common concerns of small businesses, such as: compliance, workplace policies and programs to implement to be current and attractive. The six modules of “HR Makes a Difference” take a small business owner through the employee life cycle – from recruitment through retirement – providing valuable information that is easily transferrable to their organization.

    3. South Puget Sound Chapter of SHRM

    “US Military HR Inclusion Plan”

The South Puget Sound Chapter reached out to the many military HR professionals in the state, included them in the chapter and shared best practices while supporting the veteran community. The program increased veterans’ readiness for the civilian workforce, encouraged HR Certification Institute certification, offered networking opportunities and increased the diversity of both the chapter membership and the local workforce.

    4. Southern Minnesota Area Human Resource Association

    “Your Face Here”

The program, an educational seminar raising workplace diversity awareness and discussion, was a series of transitional scenes highlighting workplace diversity issues to show how discomfort with these types of differences plays out on a daily basis in our workplace today. The seminar was performed by a cast of six professional actors and moderated by an employment law attorney, who provided commentary on the legal and the human challenges employees face in a diverse workplace.

    5. The Human Resource Association of the Midlands (HRAM)

    “Legislation at Work (LAW)”

Legislation at Work (LAW), a program focused on current legislative topics affecting HR professionals, educated chapter members on employment legislation issues and encouraged chapter members to be active with the national SHRM Advocacy Team. The program included chapter meetings focused on in-depth pertinent legislative topics, an exclusive forum with U.S. Senator Ben Nelson, a comprehensive “Day in the District,” and a day interacting with Nebraska’s congressional delegation.

    6. San Antonio Human Resource Management Association

    “Overcoming Homelessness through Employment Readiness”

The San Antonio Human Resource Management Association (SAHRMA) collaborated with Haven for Hope and SAMMinistries to provide job training for local homeless residents. Job training included facilitating instructor-led training sessions focused on proper interviewing skills in addition to conducting mock interviews. The program offered candid constructive feedback to homeless people who were trying to transition back into the workforce.

    7. West Central Arkansas SHRM

    “Managers Seminar”

The annual “Managers Seminar” program offered training programs to area managers on topics ranging from hiring to firing at a low cost. In eight years, the program has trained 766 managers and supervisors representing 248 companies.

    8. Heart of Illinois Council

    “ELITE Youth Program”

The ELITE Youth Program was a 10 week in-school program to prepare youth for competitive employment. Students received training in social skills, employment soft skills, money management, customer service, job interviews, job fair etiquette and other imperative job skills. After completing the curriculum, students earned the opportunity to interview for a part-time job from an ELITE employer. The chapter’s HR volunteer workforce provided feedback on resumes and applications for 170 students participating in the program.

    9. The Savannah Area Chapter of SHRM

“Preserving Human Capital: Workplace Violence Awareness and Preparation Initiative”

The Preserving Human Capital education and training program, in a collaborative effort between The Savannah Area Chapter of SHRM and the Effingham County Sheriff’s Office, furnished organizations with important workplace violence tools to align organizational policy, public safety response and minimization of loss of life.
